Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana: Rakul Preet Singh Reveals Why She Chose Surpanakha’s Role
Rakul Preet Singh opens up about playing Surpanakha in Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana. Find out why she accepted the complex role and what she hopes audiences will understand when the film releases on November 5.
The film’s grand sets, storytelling and character portrayals have prompted audiences to share their opinions. Among the various characters, Surpanakha has particularly caught viewers’ attention following the glimpse of Rakul Preet Singh in the trailer.
With Ramayana set to release in a few days, Rakul Preet Singh recently spoke to PTI about her character and explained why she accepted the role. She said that Surpanakha has been misunderstood in several ways throughout history and that the character has multiple dimensions. According to the actress, the war began because of Surpanakha, making the role particularly interesting to portray.
Speaking about her decision to join the film, Rakul said, "When I was offered the role of Surpanakha, I was extremely excited. There were several things about the role that I found exciting. The first was that the film represents India on the global stage. Our history and our truth will reach audiences across the world through global cinema. The second reason was that there are many misconceptions about Surpanakha, and her character has several dimensions. In fact, the war began because of her. So, portraying a character with different shades was very interesting."
Responding to a message appreciating her decision to take up the role, Rakul further explained why she found the character compelling.
"Thank you for this beautiful letter. You have captured exactly the right point about why I accepted the role of Surpanakha. The reason is that this character is extremely complex. Historically, Surpanakha is remembered only for one incident, but there is much more to her story. As an actress, roles that challenge people's perspectives are interesting. When Ramayana releases, I hope audiences will approach this character with an open mind and try to understand her," Rakul Preet Singh said.
Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Ramayana is scheduled to release on November 5. Ranbir Kapoor will portray Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi will play Goddess Sita, while South superstar Yash will appear as Ravana. The film also features Ravi Dubey as Lakshman.
Rakul Preet Singh's comments have brought renewed attention to Surpanakha's character, with the actress highlighting the complexity of a role that has traditionally been remembered for a single episode in the Ramayana.
